The evolution of patform-based tourism: disrupting traditional models
Abstract
Tourism has become the most dynamic industry, which is further growing through platform-based tourism. This chapter develops a comprehensive understanding of platform-based theories, including the disruptive innovation theory and the platform ecosystem theory. It discusses them in the context of real-world examples such as Airbnb and TripAdvisor. Additionally, the conceptual frameworks highlight how the concept of corporeal travel is further subdivided into virtual and imaginative travel. Moreover, a comparative analysis of traditional and platform-based tourism is conducted to identify the main differences between the traditional marketplace and platform-based tourism. The key dimensions include structural differences, information portals, trust mechanisms, economic outcomes, regulation and governance, social and cultural impacts, and environmental considerations, followed by recommendations for policymakers and practitioners as well as future research insights. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate the operational inefficiencies and practical challenges associated with the platform-based tourism approach, aiming to address these challenges and promise a better future.
