Business & Management Research Institute (BMRI)

The Business and Management Research Institute (BMRI) sits within the Business School and is responsible for managing and advancing research activity across business, management, and law disciplines. BMRI’s focus is to strengthen applied, interdisciplinary, and impact-driven research that responds to regional, national, and global challenges. BMRI has four strategic research themes: Responsible AI and Digital Transformation; Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship; Responsible Leadership and Organisations; and Law and Social Justice.

The institute will support the University’s wider strategic positioning by connecting research with teaching, professional practice, policy, industry engagement, and societal need. Its role is to ensure that research contributes to student experience, doctoral development, external partnerships, and practical impact for business and society.

Our Vision

BMRI aims to be a nationally and internationally recognised hub for interdisciplinary research in four thematic areas: Responsible AI and Digital Transformation, Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship, Responsible Leadership and Organisations, Law and Social Justice, addressing contemporary challenges in business and society through impactful, ethical, and inclusive knowledge creation that drives social impact and sustainable futures. In doing so, BMRI’s vision directly supports the University of Bedfordshire’s strategic position as a specialist provider of teaching with applied research in business, management, and law, where research activity informs education, professional practice, and societal engagement.

This vision reflects staff aspirations for BMRI to move from a collection of strong but largely autonomous research centres to a more strategically positioned Institute with a clear external identity and internal coherence.

BMRI’s mission is to generate, disseminate, and apply socially responsible research that shapes business and management practice, public policy, and education. In doing so, the institute is committed to:

  • Advancing original, rigorous, and impactful research that addresses pressing business, organisational, social, environmental, and ethical challenges
  • Building bridges between academia, industry, and society to co-create practical and equitable solutions
  • Embedding research-informed teaching that equips students and doctoral researchers to act responsibly in complex, digital, and interconnected environments
