An exploration of 3D printing to assist the preservation and succession of Portuguese Caldas da Rainha embroidery

This practice-based study employs a heuristic approach that considers connectivity and the potential application of three-dimensional Printing technology (3D Printing) to reinterpret traditional Portuguese embroidery, originating from Caldas da Rainha, with an emphasis on preserving cultural heritage and ensuring the transmission of traditional crafts to future generations.
To this end, the researcher examines the heritage and practice of handcrafted traditional embroidery techniques used in Caldas da Rainha, in conjunction with technological aspects, production, and prototyping. The study values the capabilities of 3D Printing technologies, aligning them with the complexities of embroidery stitches and patterns characteristic of this regional craft.
A playful, practice-based methodology is adopted to reinvent and develop the traditional characteristics of Caldas da Rainha embroidery while maintaining its essence.
Specifically, the study investigates the potential of replicating and reproducing embroidery stitches and explores how they might be revitalised through 3D Printing technology. Experiments and sampling have demonstrated the potential of available 3D Printing machinery and material substrates across various surfaces suitable for fashion fabrics.
The primary objective is to create an innovative interconnection of continuous, printed mediums that explore embroidery techniques, potentially aiding in the reinvention and rejuvenation of the traditional embroidery practices of Caldas da Rainha, with broader implications.
As part of this investigation, fostering interest in the preservation of endangered traditions and ensuring the succession of traditional knowledge to new generations and fashion practitioners constitutes a key goal. Additionally, the development of a collaborative relationship with the Caldas da Rainha Embroidery Association is envisioned. It is anticipated that this study will support local economies and small craft workers in Caldas da Rainha, thereby contributing to the preservation of this traditional art form.
The research is oriented towards the future, aiming to preserve and transmit the cultural heritage and vernacular of traditional Portuguese embroidery through 3D Printing, with potential impacts across other creative and product-oriented industries, ensuring the continuity of craft traditions.
