Abstract

During the second half of the 20th century, higher education (HE) systems significantly expanded in Europe and elsewhere (Shavit et al., 2007). Whether these quantitative developments and the related widening participation (WP) rhetoric of many governments have been associated with the democratisation of HE remains a topical and much debated issue, including in France, the focus of this chapter.
