The shifting tones of Aneil Karia’s The Long Goodbye (2020)

Abstract

This article first locates genre as a conceptual lens through which filmmakers, institutions and audiences have co-constructed meaning within films. It then develops a close reading of the 2022 Oscar-winning short film The Long Goodbye, a collaboration between writer/rapper Riz Ahmed and director Aneil Karia. Finally, the article identifies key dimensions of the film’s innovative approach to British social realism and genre mutability.
