Reading classrooms: how to maximise learning from classroom observation

Research Output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding Chapter Peer-review

Abstract

In this unit, you will learn how to observe and analyse classroom teaching and learning experiences. Moving beyond passive watching, you'll develop skills to actively ‘read’ classroom dynamics. You will explore specific strategies and tools for observing various aspects of classroom practice, including teacher positioning, student interactions, lesson structure, classroom management and assessment for learning. Through practical tasks using a suite of templates, you'll gain experience in analysing lesson beginnings and endings, transitions between activities, teacher talk, pupil responses and the use of learning resources. You will also learn about the ethical considerations of classroom observation and develop your observation skills through structured activities. The unit encourages you to use video for self-reflection and professional development. You'll discover that observation is a skill that develops over time and serves as a crucial tool for your professional growth throughout your teaching career, supporting both reflective practice and practitioner research.
