Abstract

In this chapter we consider identity as the collective aspect of the set of characteristics or features by which a thing, be it a person (real world) or avatar (virtual world), is definitively recognizable or known. In both environments, we take a number of attributes or characteristics to be proxies of identity when assessing an identity. These include, but are not limited to, factors such as visual appearance, fingerprints, name, personality and behavior. The relative strength of these attributes varies between the real and online worlds, as does the way in which we approach the task of recognizing and confirming identity. Does the virtual world identity have an impact on the identities in the real world? It is important that we understand if social behaviors in virtual worlds induce the user to behave the same way in the real world.
