Abstract
Abstract
Mental health nursing students are presenting with increased rates of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rates. Nurse training exposes students to stress during clinical placement, essay submissions, and exams. Alarmingly, the suicide rate for male AEI students is higher than females with 720 male deaths to 388 female suicide deaths. Evidence suggests that traditional psychological treatments, AEI student support services, and the emergence of simulation may enhance student nurse resilience and mental health and well-being during their studies and in clinical placement. This article reviews the complexity of poor mental health presentations, the lack of supporting mechanisms in AEIs and clinical practice and the need for curriculum integration and workforce preparedness surrounding the mental health well-being of student nurses.
