Description
This project aimed to address the research question: are existing measures providing effective care to patients presenting with myocardial infarction to Bedfordshire Hospitals and what are the factors that impair effectiveness of the present provisions?
Layman's description
This project aimed to understand why people in Luton and Dunstable have worse heart health outcomes than nearby areas, despite having good prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services.
This project analysed anonymous hospital records from 2019 to 2023 to look at the ethnicity and the diagnosis of the patients admitted with myocardial infarction to the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.
This project also interviewed twenty-five (n=25) patients in phases 2 to 4 in cardiac rehabilitation services, as well as seven (n=7) healthcare staff who provided services in cardiac rehabilitation. The interviews aimed to understand barriers to accessing cardiac rehabilitation services and making long-term lifestyle changes.
By identifying the barriers to accessing cardiac rehabilitation services from the perspectives of both the patients and the healthcare providers, this project informs the recommendations to improve the cardiac rehabilitation programme to improve patient-centred care and increase uptake and continuity of the programme among the patients.

This project highlights that we shouldn’t just blame individual patients for not following advice or missing treatment. Instead, we need to look at the whole healthcare system and how it can work better together. Future improvements should include better support for patients, smoother care between hospital and home, and rehabilitation services that are more flexible, culturally appropriate, and available in local communities or online
