Olivia Hawes

Mrs

Olivia Hawes is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Health Research and a Doctoral Researcher at the Institute of Applied Social Research at the University of Bedfordshire. Her current research involves working with diverse communities to understand how to improve access to and confidence in using greenspaces and the countryside. Her work is grounded in participatory approaches, and is driven by a commitment to helping individuals and communities flourish through meaningful movement. Her PhD developed a conceptual framework linking meaningful physical activity, physical literacy, embodiment, and human flourishing, with a particular focus on fostering healthier, more connected communities.

Olivia currently leads the Physical Literacy for Active Communities initiative, collaborating with partners across sectors to design programmes that strengthen health behaviours and wellbeing, particularly within underserved communities. Her previous work includes founding the Beyond Limits initiative in partnership with Bedford Borough Council to support SEND communities, and contributing to active landscape planning with Lands Improvement Holdings to help shape healthier places.
