Searches
We will search the following bibliographic databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Global health and African Journal Online (AJOL). The search strategy will include a combination of subject terms and free text terms, according to keywords. These terms will be combined with ‘OR’ and ‘AND’ operators. The medical subject headings (MeSH) terms will be used.
The specific search strategy has been developed with assistance from a librarian with expertise in systematic review searching. The searches and data extraction will be conducted by two reviewers (GO and SP) with GO taking the lead in extracting data from the articles and SP cross-checking for accuracy. Data would be extracted from studies published between January 2008 and February 2019. Language is restricted to studies published in English.
Study design
We will include primary cross-sectional studies reporting the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies and any risk factors recorded.
